/ti/~/tSi/ CONTRAST PRESERVATION IN JAPANESE LOANS IS PARASITIC ON SEGMENTAL CUES TO PROSODIC STRUCTURE
نویسنده
چکیده
Acoustic analysis of [tSi] tokens produced in native words by two generations of Japanese speakers reveals a systematic influence of prosodic structure on the duration of frication following the release of consonant closure. This phonetic gradience supports a phonological contrast in loanwords that is absent from the native system. Implications of the data for phonological theories of loanword adaptation are discussed.

Production of English Lexical Stress by Persian EFL Learners
This study examines the phonetic properties of lexical stress in English produced by Persian speakers learning English as a foreign language. The four most reliable phonetic correlates of English lexical stress, namely fundamental frequency, duration, intensity, and vowel quality were measured across Persian speakers’ production of the stressed and unstressed syllables of five English disyllabi...
متن کاملAuditory-visual perception of prosodic information: inter-linguistic analysis - contrastive focus in French and Japanese
Audition and vision are combined for the perception of speech segments and recent studies have shown that this is also the case for some types of supra-segmental information such as prosodic focus. The integration of vision and audition for the perception of speech segments however seems to be less important in Japanese. This study aims at comparing auditory-visual perception of prosodic contra...
متن کاملThe use of phrase-level prosodic information in lexical segmentation: evidence from word-spotting experiments in Korean.
This study investigated the role of phrase-level prosodic boundary information in word segmentation in Korean with two word-spotting experiments. In experiment 1, it was found that intonational cues alone helped listeners with lexical segmentation. Listeners paid more attention to local intonational cues (...H#L...) across the prosodic boundary than the intonational information within a prosodi...
متن کاملTiming Relationships between Prosodic and Segmental Control in Osaka Japanese Word Accent
This paper examines onset times of prosodic and segmental transitions with corresponding sternohyoid muscle activity in the speech of Osaka Japanese. The synchronization between prosodic and segmental control occurs in words combining a close vowel followed, directly or indirectly, by an open vowel with High-Low accent, including words with devoiced accented vowels. Both segmental and prosodic ...
متن کاملImpaired processing of prosodic and musical patterns after right hemisphere damage.
The distinction between the processing of musical information and segmental speech information (i.e., consonants and vowels) has been much explored. In contrast, the relationship between the processing of music and prosodic speech information (e.g., intonation) has been largely ignored. We report an assessment of prosodic perception for an amateur musician, KB, who became amusic following a rig...
